Connecting for ePrescribing

New York Mandate Approaching Fast!

For New York prescribers, the deadline is nearly here. Effective March 27, 2016, electronic prescribing for both controlled and non-controlled substances will be required in New York State.

In order to process electronic prescriptions for controlled substances (EPCS), a prescriber must select and use a certified electronic prescribing computer application that meets all federal requirements. Each unique certified computer application used to electronically prescribe controlled substances must first be registered by the practitioner with the New York State Department of Health (DOH), Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement (BNE).

Time is running out!

Please be aware that implementation timelines for ePrescribing vary and may be lengthy. EPCS certification and preparation can add even more time to a tight schedule. If you have not already begun this process, BNE strongly recommends that you begin immediately. Start with contacting your EHR software provider or Long Term Care facility you service for next steps.

How does it affect you as a Prescriber?

If your EHR software provider or LTC facilities you visit do not support ePrescribing you will need to insist that they provide you a method to comply with the mandate.

After March 27, 2016 your prescription will not be filled unless it meets the ePrescribing mandate. Willful non-compliance is considered a violation of NY Public Health Law 12-b. Non-compliance carries penalties including but not limited to, a fine of up to $2,000, imprisonment or both. http://law.onecle.com/new-york/public-health/PBH012-B_12-B.html
